The twin contexts of Pride Weekend and the release of Big Freedia’s Azz Everywhere 12″ by a Chaos in Tejas fest promoter delivered some serious ass cheeks to Austin recently.
I weaseled my way up front as soon as the show started, safely perched atop a chair near the stage. Instead of doing back-to-back separate sets as they were billed, Big Freedia and Katy Red took the stage together. The crowd went nuts. I felt an irresistible force emanating from the rolling wave of bouncing asses. Powerless to resist, I hopped off the chair and dove in camera first.

The asses didn’t stop moving. There was a point where I felt like I was about to be swallowed by a particularly round one clothed in a cheerleader costume. Emboldened by the sweat of about 200 costumed lesbians drenching my skin (the largely female crowd was done up in glitter, spikes, and rainbows, the general vibe resembling My Little Pony meets Mad Max), my ass went everywhere theirs did. Friend azz!
Soon Big Freedia started picking especially vibrant dancers out of the crowd and the entire stage became a beautiful day-glo chaos of bouncing bodies shining with enough sweat to fill a kiddie pool. Here’s the proof.
