Dear Diary

JANUARY 15, 1982

I finished the book East of Eden and I saw the movie but I think the book will stick with me longer than the movie. But I must say Jane Seymour is so beautiful as Katherine. She had long hair down to her bum and I am going to grow mine that way. The word “timshel” in the book means to rule over desire. It really hit home because my choice would be to be myself, rather than a mold, or a bad mold as Adam Trask was in the book and movie. Then I remember what God said unto Cain after he slayed Abel. Genesis 4 verse 7 goes “If thou doesn’t well, shalt thou not be accepted? And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door and unto thee shall be desire and thou shalt rule over him and desire. And God be armed with thee.”

NOVEMBER, 2000

I went to Catholic school and, while others memorized Shakespeare and sports stats, we learned the Bible. It came in handy fifteen years later when I briefly dated a guy whose tattoo (one of several) said “Arm your desires.”

Despite my ability to connect his tattoo biblically, quote from Steinbeck and give great head, he went back to his ex, a twenty year-old who, though beautiful, has probably never finished a book or committed to a miniseries in her entire life. I like to believe he dumped me because I wouldn’t let him put anything in my bum until we were engaged. Jane Seymour still has hair down to her bum despite the fact that she’s around seventy now. She is beginning to resemble a woman who should be haunting forests instead of starring in gaylord shows like “Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.”
