Lady Chann: “Feel Calm” (Video)

This is the latest release from one of London’s proper dancehall talents, Chanelle Williams, aka Lady Chann, who’s now on course for her mission statement to get white girls twerking, dutty whining and sipping Vita Coco with Malibu (trust me, this is a thing) at club nights across the UK.

This melodic ode to love as is a far more stripped back take than the Toddla T remix that did the rounds, which was saturated with his trademark schizophrenic jungle and house inflections. The video isn’t exactly groundbreaking (props to someone who just wants people to recognise their face) as she simply delivers a purring vocal over Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh” riddim and paws over a man who “never wan’ use me like no whore”. The thing with Chann, is she always manages to make her jaunts into rapping in patois not want to punch yourself in the face and make your box recoil in white-hot hate, which is more than can be said about any ~urban pop~ act in history ev-er who’ve tried their hand at a fauxmaican break. She’s British dancehall’s real deal.
