New York music of the rock ‘n’ roll variety goes in cycles. There’s always the good and there’s always the truly awful, but there are definitely times when the shit gets real exciting. The inverse would be the period in between the early 1990s noise-rock Unsane/Cop Shoot Cop and the holy hot-shit golden hullabaloo of The Strokes/YYY’s/Interpol era. In between, with the exception of the Goths, who are unchanging and eternal, there were a lot of motherfuckers in cowboy hats and it was brutal. Don’t let anyone tell you New York isn’t fun anymore; there’s been plenty of times when it sucked worse than now.
