Fugitive Finales
ONE OF BRITAIN’S MOST WANTED FUGITIVES WAS ARRESTED IN SPAIN
And the police filmed the whole thing; kind of like ‘Street Wars’ but actually exciting

Andrew Moran, one of Britain’s most wanted fugitives and unfortunate wearer of a pre-pubescent John Waters moustache, has been arrested in Alicante on Spain’s Costa Blanca.

The 31-year-old Salford native was charged with an armed robbery of Royal Mail guards in Lancashire in 2005, but absconded during his trial before being found guilty in absence.

Moran was reportedly located by local police in Los Alcazares, Spain last November, but managed to avoid arrest by ramming two unmarked police vehicles and speeding off the wrong way down the motorway.

Which was idiotic, because now he’s going to have a dangerous driving charge to contend with as well as the whole robbery thing.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) said that they recovered two handguns, 60 rounds of ammunition and a machete from his villa after his arrest, which also presumably isn’t going to look too great when he’s back in front of a judge.

Xenophobia in the USA
IOWA AND INDIANA ARE APPARENTLY THE MOST RACIST PLACES IN AMERICA
Or at least contain the most racist Twitter users

(via)

A study conducted by the Humboldt State University in California has concluded that racism, homophobia and general intolerance are not specific to any region of the USA.

However, their Geography of Hate project – which mapped out hate speech by analysing geo-tagged Twitter posts – found that the use of the word “nigger” had pockets of concentration in Iowa and Indiana; two places where people weren’t particularly fussed about visiting before and are probably even less fussed about visiting now.

Unless, of course, they’re racists, in which case the study probably acted as a kind of rallying billboard for future hate rallies in soggy Midwestern fields.

The study had students analysing Twitter posts for ten different hateful words relating to race, sexuality and disability, which they then marked on to a map.

Considering the entire eastern half of the map is bright red, you might have already surmised that people over that way are generally more bigoted. But you can take a closer look on the interactive map in case you have friends who live in, say, Duluth, Minnesota and want to tease/console them about living in a city that got a “most hate” rating.

Squatting Successes
THE GUYS OCCUPYING MINISTRIES IN TRIPOLI HAVE BACKED DOWN
The anti-Gaddafi gunmen were demanding that no one associated with Gaddafi be appointed to government

The Libyan gunmen who were occupying both the justice ministry and the foreign ministry in Tripoli have ended their siege.

The occupiers were demanding that no Gaddafi-era officials should be allowed to serve in the country’s new government, and the law passed last week that stated exactly that was obviously enough to get them to pack up and leave.

Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani said, “Lessons have been learnt that state institutions should not be touched… [and] the use of weapons should not be on the table. It causes all sorts of problems for this emerging democracy.”

Since Gaddafi’s death, Tripoli and other Libyan cities have been plagued by violence from militia’s that formed during the uprising, but the government are currently trying to dismantle those militias and regain control of their country.

Gay Marches
HUNDREDS OF CUBANS MARCHED AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA IN HAVANA
Which is a pretty big deal considering gay rights marches were illegal five years ago

(via)

Hundreds of Cubans marched for gay rights and against homophobia in the country’s capital city of Havana.

Until 2008, before current Cuban President Raul Castro came to power, gay rights marches were not allowed in Cuba, but one marcher – 29-year-old Jesus Rios – said that Cuba “has made great progress over the past years”.

Leading the march was the Cuban President’s daughter and gay rights campaigner Mariel Castro, who said that she was optimistic that the country would eventually legalise gay marriage, but pointed out that their was still a lot of prejudice to overcome.

Acceptance of homosexuality in Latin America is growing, with Uruguay last month becoming the second country after Argentina to legalise gay marriage.

Exotic Bestiality
THIS GUY WAS ARRESTED FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING A PEACOCK
If there’s ever been a face that screams “I make tropical birds my sexual playthings”, it’s this one

David Beckman, a 63-year-old Chicago resident, has been arrested for somehow managing to sexually abuse a peacock named Phyl, which was later found dead in his garage.

Police uncovered the animal abuse while investigating Beckman over the alleged indecent solicitation of a child.

So it’s safe to say that he’s not really the kind of guy you’d invite round for a family function or, in fact, want to give your address to or speak to ever.
