It seems like an age since Manchester’s Dub Phizix capsized drum and bass with the groundshaking “Marka”. Steeped in half-step duttiness, it took just 11 minutes for every copy to be snapped up after the release in December 2011. The track, which featured the brilliant vocals of Broke-N-£nglish’s Strategy, came courtesy of Exit Records – the label run by D&B megalith, dBridge. “Marka” refused to be pigeon holed by any previous formula, putting dancehall-influenced rhythms head to head with Strategy’s rumbling lyrical spurts.
Phizix is no newbie, mind. He’s grafted for over a decade, both heavily involved in Manchester’s Estate Recordings as well as a whole heap of D&B label royalty. Just peep his discography to reel through record goldmines like Soul:R, Critical, Samurai Music, Commercial Suicide, Dispatch and Ingredients.
