In July 2014, Rice received a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy. On August 28, 2014, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a letter to NFL owners and personnel saying he “didn’t get it right” with Rice’s punishment and subsequently increased the league’s penalties for domestic violence.

On September 8, 2014, TMZ released a longer version of the elevator security video, which showed Rice punching Palmer, knocking her unconscious, and dragging her out of the elevator. That same day, the Baltimore Ravens terminated its contract with Rice. Hours later, the NFL suspended Rice from the league indefinitely. Rice appealed the indefinite suspension and was represented by the NFL Players Association’s lawyers. On November 28, 2014, Rice won his appeal and was reinstated in the NFL. He has not yet signed with a new team.

Through a press representative, the Rices declined to comment.
