5,800 Swatch Watches Sell for $6 Million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong

A superlot containing 5,800 Swatch & Art watches sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong for $6 million last Tuesday, so how much do you wish you had saved all your old Swiss timepieces? “I have been very happy and emotional to see the international interest in my collection over the past months,” Hodinkee reports seller Paul Dunkel said of his sale to an unspecified European institution. “This is a true testament to the universal appeal of Swatch.” The collection, one of the largest in existence, includes rare artist-designed pieces, city- and culture-inspired watches, and the original art created with the watches, and was assembled over two-and-a-half decades. Says Dunkel, “I wish the new owner of these 5,800 pieces all the best and hope the collection will bring to others as much joy as I have had with it over the last 25 years of this adventure.”
