I Asked The History Of Apple Pie’s Bassist If She Would Date My Friend

Hey, have you heard the new History Of Apple Pie album? It’s a great record that they’ve packed tight with chugging guitars and sugary sweet vocals and topped off with reverb infused production that sounds like rainbow coloured ice cream. It’s colorful, bright and all things beautiful and kind of makes me wish that we lived in a Brat Pack universe. Anyway, they’re currently on tour and we caught up with them to ask a couple questions (and to call in a favour for a friend!)

Noisey: Hey guys! It’s been two years since we last spoke! What’s changed since then?

Steph: It’s moved on a lot, haha. We’ve got more stuff done in the last year than we’ve done ever before.

So, you’re happy with how the album turned out? Because there’s tracks like ‘You’re So Cool’ which have been out for ages now.

Yeah, we couldn’t leave that track off! The thing is, you’ve got half the people complaining that the album has tracks on that came out two years ago, but if we didn’t put them on, there would be the same amount of people complaining that they weren’t on there.

Do you feel like you’re living more of a rock’n’roll lifestyle now?

Kelly: Probably less actually, haha.

So, do you have day jobs or is the band full time?

Steph: All of us have day jobs. I do events production, full time.

Kelly: I wait on and I work at Rough Trade, part time. I was there full time but I had to quit to go on tour. YEAH!

And James has his Parakeet side project, right? Do the rest of you all have your own separate musical ventures?

Steph: I don’t have time!

Kelly: We all do different bits of music on the side.

Steph: Kelly has done some vocal stuff for Danny Avery and Erol Alkan. Then Jerome does some production stuff. He did a couple of tracks for a Pond side project called Allbrook/Avery.

Kelly: He also works with little bands like Novella and stuff.

We’ve all heard by now how You’re So Cool and True Romance are linked, so I’m not gonna ask you again. But, what’s your favourite teen film?

Steph: Ohhh. Uhh. I really liked She’s All That back in the day. Does Jay and Silent Bob count?

Yeah, definitely!

Kelly: I’m just looking at your t-shirt and I’m only thinking of Home Alone.

Macaulay Culkin is peeping out. If you could soundtrack a teen film, what one would you guys pick? I could see it on a Brat Pack OST.

Kelly: What about Empire Records? I fucking love that film.

Steph: I was watching 10 Things I Hate About You the other day and they have a girl band who does the soundtrack. I thought they kind of sounded like us.

Joseph Gordon Levitt <3. what=”” films=”” have=”” you=”” been=”” watching=”” recently?<=”” b=””>3.>

Steph: I like Transformers and I like the Silent Hill movie but no one else seems to like it. :(

Have you not seen Django yet?!

Kelly: Nope. Before the tour we were working hard and now we’re on tour we never get time.

Steph: When we get home we switch on the Freeview and watch Challenge TV.

Oh, Challenge TV has some great shows. What TV program from the 90s needs to return? Personally, I really miss Fort Boyard.

Kelly: Yes!

Steph: Haha, it’s still on! We were watching it the other day.

Is it re-runs though?

Kelly: It wasn’t the original guy…. Oh wait. Shit. Sorry, I thought we were talking about Crystal Maze.

Steph: Hey, Jerome, was the Fort Boyard show the other day a re-run?

Jerome: Yeah.

:(

Steph: Doug needs to return. The reason why I say that is because we were thinking of something to do for Record Store Day and, we were really into covering the band who are in Doug. Their songs are ridiculously poppy.

Kelly: I really miss Sister Sister.

I’ve never heard of that!

Kelly: oh my god, YouTube!

Haha, I will. People paint you as having a “nostalgic” sound. If you could go back and play any era, where, when and why?

Steph: It’d probably be the obvious Sonic Youth. I grew up listening to Placebo and stuff, so even that would be cool.

Kelly: I’d want to go back to the sixties, proper Beatles mania.

Whenever I listen to your songs, I always think about candy. What are your favourite sweets?

Steph: Cherry drops! Pear drops! Anything with drops on the end! I like Haribo, but I always end up eating the hearts and the eggs and leaving the rest.

Kelly: I like peanut M&Ms.

Hard question time. If you could describe the album as a type of sweet, what type would it be?

Steph: It’d probably be an aniseed ball! Or, something which is a bit sour but also sweet. What kind of sweet is that? Or, hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Haha.

Kelly: A fucking creme egg!

The video for ‘See You’ reminds me of a high school prom. Do you have any wild after prom stories?

Steph: I didn’t go.

Kelly: I didn’t have one, so I feel like I missed out. I’m reliving it now.

What was the idea behind the video?

Steph: It was going to be something completely different, which always ends up happening when we work with Camille Benett, who did the video. We start with an idea and then realise we have absolutely no budget for it, haha. The original was that we were going to have a roller disco derby thing going on, but it got shut down. She directed You’re So Cool and Mallory as well and she knows how to handle us. We’re like children and she’s the Mother.

I always wish that I could go back to school. It’s way more innocent than having to deal with gas bills and council tax. If you could go back to school now, what would you change?

Kelly: I’d have liked to have learnt more instruments. I would have taken advantage of all the free music lessons.

Yeah, we had so many instruments in the music rooms!

Kelly: Yeah, I did an African drummer composition with fifty djembes for my GCSE. What the fuck! Like, when do you get to do that?

Steph: I wouldn’t like to go back. But, if I did, I’d tell everyone to fuck off!

Kelly: Wow.

:( Why the vendetta against school?

Steph: I went to a private school and I didn’t feel like I fitted in there. I was part of some groups, but they seemed to dispose of people really easily. Anyone that was going to be destined for academic success ended up having babies really young, or ended up working for the council or something really horrible.

I’ve noticed you guys seem to like ice cream. There’s the cone outfit in the video for ‘You’re So Cool’ and the album cover has an ice cream van on the front. What’s the deal with that?

Steph: When me and Jerome first put the songs up on MySpace to show our friends, we put an image which was a picture of an ice cream van. With the album, we weren’t sure what to do and we wanted to get that original image but it was too low-res, so, we recreated it.

Kelly: We went on an ice cream van hunt!

Steph: Haha, yeah and we also wanted something really colorful and memorable.

Alright. Last question. My friend saw you in Brighton yesterday and tweeted you guys saying that he really fancies Kelly.

Steph: Ohhh, was that your friend? What’s his name, Adam or something?

His name is Ally. Kelly, are you single?

Kelly: I am single, yes.

And, are you looking for someone?

Kelly: Does he look like Jeff Buckley?

No.

Kelly: Then I’m not interested.

Sorry Ally.
