Yesterday the ninth annual Pitchfork Music Festival kicked off in Chicago. It was the chillest opening day yet–the temperature, with a mild high of 80, was as pleasant as it gets in smack-dab middle of July for The Windy City. Blame the polar vortex. The lineup was equally palatable with performances by Beck, Giorgio Moroder, Avey Tare‘s Slasher Flicks, Sun Kil Moon, Sharon Van Etten, the Haxan Cloak, Neneh Cherry, Factory Floor, SZA and Hundred Waters. Everything went really smoothly–especially without the now-defunct Death Grips, initially scheduled to play Friday, who imaginably would have shaken shit up.
Instead, we got a relatively tame first day where the biggest moshpit happened to be the bronado swirling about in OG dance legend Giorgio Moroder’s crowd as he spun some of his classics, including his hits with Donna Summer “Love to Love You,” “Hot Stuff,” and “On the Radio.” Beck also gave the crowd exactly what they wanted to hear–”Loser,” “Devil’s Haircut,” and –and a cover of Moroder’s “I Think I’m in Love/ I Feel Love” no one knew they wanted to hear but went down well nonetheless. Photographer Ellie Pritts was on the scene, capturing all of the best music moments and the scenes.
