I have no idea what’s going on with the trailer for Kanye West’s Cruel Winter, his upcoming album that may or may not be with Q-Tip. It’s a nothing of a video, featuring no music by Kanye West or giving us any idea of what the album might possibly sound like.
Instead, we’re treated to a few barren shots of nature, cut together in a way that reminds me of any time in an Eastern European film when somebody’s about to get murdered. And then there’s the narration, which is a bit of George H. W. Bush’s speech announcing the start of the Gulf War. It has nothing to do with anything, and at this point there’s not really a point to get offended or even surprised by Kanye doing shit like this. Like, obviously he thinks his next album is as big a deal as the leader of the free world announcing something that’s gonna change history and irreversibly change the lives of millions. That’s just the scale at which Kanye West’s brain works. There’s no way he cleared this with Bush, right? Copyright law says he at least had to clear it with whatever network he sampled it from, but decorum says you should probably ask a president if you can sample them, or something. Either way, it’s another notable moment of Kanye having a weird thing with Republicans, and also it’s gonna be awkward when Bush finds out because Kanye did talk a bunch of shit about his kid.
