Iowa State Columnist Breaks Leg As Fans Storm Court After Win Over Iowa

Iowa State beat Iowa at home and stormed the court and a member of the media suffered a broken leg.

No. 4 Iowa State beat unranked Iowa last night in a fairly dramatic game at home, and college kids being college kids, they stormed the court. Which is totally fine. The Cyclones, who trailed by as many as 20, ended the game on a 9-0 run and took an 83-82 lead with nine seconds left in the game. That also happened to be their first lead since 4-3. So, it was a pretty exciting rivalry game, even if it wasn't an upset. Anyone who wants to have a debate about storming the court…I don't know what to say, change seats if you sit down next to someone like that because they will argue about anything.

As the court slowly filled up with Iowa State fans, ESPN cameras panned to a wide shot of the court and you could see a man fall on the ground in the lower right corner. He rolled around and was attended to and the camera kept panning around. After the game, we learned it was Des Moines Register columnist Randy Peterson, who had suffered a compound fracture, breaking both his tibia and fibula. Initially people said he was trampled during the court storming, but he obviously wasn't, as you can see in the video and GIF. He did trip, however, and after having surgery said on Twitter he thought he locked legs with someone.

Ouch

It's unfortunate that Peterson got hurt, but this really could have happened anywhere, anytime. But you can be sure the Angry Yelling Men of Sports will have something to say about this allllll day today.
