Jaw-Dropping CGI Water Droplets and Insects Interact in a Macro World

Looking at ants under a magnifying glass doesn’t have anything on this macro vision of caterpillars, spiders, and dragonflies bathed in effervescent dew drops animated by CGI wunderkind Alexey Zakharov. Since exploding onto the motion graphics scene with an abundantly watchable 3D tribute to Futurama, Zakharov has honed his skills with short videos, the latest of which is Water Drops. The series of vignettes is resplendent with the drama of the natural world usually limited to a David Attenborough documentary. Like Monet, Zakharov pays exquisite attention to the way light reflects off of water and onto plants and animals. The short is set to Arcade Fire’s “Dimensions,” a soothing track from Spike Jonze’s Her. If this is what a lone Lepidoptera enthusiast can accomplish, we can’t wait to see how Hayao Miyazaki’s in-progress CGI short Boro the Caterpillar turns out.
