THE LEDGER: KD picks the Warriors; Stirs up the trans-Tasman sporting feud

Even a big free agent signing in the NBA causes ripples across the Ditch
Ben Thomson

Maybe you've only really been devoting yourself to Euro 2016 football or the drama that has been Kevin Durant in free agency, but Kiwis and Aussies have been doing battle through the sporting world too.

Who did better? THE LEDGER has done the hard work trying to figure it out, so you don't have to.

CRICKET

It's been all quiet on the cricket front for both trans-Tasman neighbours in the last week, following the final of the Tri-Nations tournament in the West Indies.

Kane Williamson will lead the Black Caps to Zimbabwe and South Africa soon for his first two series as captain, but until then, refresh Cricinfo every few days and wait for some new willow on leather action.

FOOTBALL

The only show on in the footballing world is Euro 2016. The Cinderella story of Wales, the glory of England being knocked out by Iceland – and the likelihood of Germany steamrolling its way to the title – it's had everything.

Not much there for Kiwi and Aussie football fans to do but crack open a beer, put up your feet and enjoy not being involved.

RUGBY UNION

After a rough few weeks for the Wallabies, Australian rugby union fans must have been looking forward to Super Rugby cranking back into gear last weekend.

After all, if the present is terrible, surely you take the alternative, regardless? Call that the 'Brexit logic.'

Though Australian teams were spared games against teams from across the Ditch, only the Brumbies and Waratahs were able to notch up wins. Conversely, the Kiwi teams had three victories (Chiefs, Canes and Highlanders) – and they had two New Zealand derbies.

Thank Christ for rugby, aye Kiwis.

WINNER: New Zealand

RUGBY LEAGUE

What a revolution at Mt Smart Stadium it's been over the last six weeks since the infamous prescription drug scandal.

After last weekend's heartbreaking one-point loss to the Sharks, the Warriors rolled back into action with a 27-18 victory over the Titans in Auckland.

The Warriors are in a logjam at the tail end of the NRL Ladder, but officially sit in seventh right now. Things are trending well for playoff footy this year – who woulda thought it?

NETBALL

Well the playoff schedule has been sealed with the ANZ Championship regular season over.

With the Queensland Firebirds and Southern Steel winning the Aussie and Kiwi conferences, both get a free pass into the conference finals. New South Wales and Melbourne play in the Aussie playoff, and Waikato-Bay of Plenty face off against the Northern Mystics on the Kiwi side.

The fact that the Mystics have only won three out of 13 games and made the playoffs – and Australia's West Coast Fever, who won seven games, didn't - shows the weakness of the New Zealand side of the competition. It's pretty clear why this is the ANZ Championship's last season.

WINNER: Australia

MOTORSPORT

Outside F1, it's been pretty quiet on the motorsport front for Kiwi and Aussie drivers.

The Indycars have been on a bit of a break, so the battle for trans-Tasman supremacy between Scott Dixon and Will Power is having a bye week – as is action in the V8 Supercars in Australia.

Aussie F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo has been firing up though, finishing fifth in the Austrian Grand Prix over last weekend.

He's had a good year, that Danny Boy.

BASKETBALL

If you're a basketball fan, you've definitely got some thoughts on Durant's decision to sign up with the Golden State Warriors.

Aussie and Kiwi NBA stars Andrew Bogut and Steven Adams are certainly basketball fans, and have both had their careers shaken sizably by KD's decision.

With the Warriors over the salary cap, Bogut was swiftly traded to the Dallas Mavericks while the Thunder's Adams now finds himself on a team that came within 12 minutes of an NBA Finals series that is now cast on the Western Conference also-rans pile.

The question is: who would you rather be? Bogut won a title with the Warriors, but will be feeling bitter that he can't be part of the impending KD/Chef Curry juggernaut. Adams, meanwhile, will know that he'll have to realistically leave Oklahoma City to further his career.

Say what you like about KD's decision, but it wasn't great for the biggest Anzac stars in the NBA.

OLYMPIC SPORTS: DIVING

For the first time in 24 years, New Zealand will have a diver competing at the Olympics in August.

Elizabeth Cui, an 18-year-old Aucklander, has qualified for Rio in the three metre springboard competition.

"Since I was eight, all I've known is diving. I eat, breathe and live diving. Ten years of dedicating my life to this sport has never felt more satisfying," she said, when named in the Kiwi Olympic team.

Good on ya, Liz.

Peter Moylan's journey in pro baseball has been a pretty incredible one.

A former concreter from Perth, Moylan – who was featured on VICE Sports last week - has suffered two potentially career-ending elbow injuries and bounced around minor and major league teams – but now finds himself playing for the reigning World Series champs.

He's been a handy part of their bullpen this season too, with a 3.05 ERA in 20.2 innings (pretty handy stats, if you don't know baseball).

Your cobbers back Down Under salute you, Pete.

NEW ZEALAND 4.5 AUSTRALIA 4.5 (TIE BREAKER: NEW ZEALAND)

In an incredible first, THE LEDGER has encounter its first ever draw, meaning tie-breaker rules must be enforced. A sporting category is chosen, at random, and the winning nation takes home the glory.

The random tiebreaker this week is rugby league, meaning the Kiwis have got it.

Either that, or the fact that this week's writer of THE LEDGER is a New Zealander.

The running total is now Australia 9 and New Zealand 3.

BONUS: CLASSIC MOMENT IN AUSSIE-NZ RIVALRY

THE LEDGER has stumbled across a random piece of internet gold, with a YouTube clip of an Aussie bogan reliving some of trans-Tasman sports biggest sporting moments in commentary form.

This is some pretty classic stuff.
