Boxer Nick Blackwell Awake and Speaking After Seven-Day Coma

The boxer Nick Blackwell has woken from an induced coma and is able top speak with family and friends, his promoter Hennessey Sports have confirmed.

The 25-year-old was placed in a coma as a precaution following his recent British middleweight title defeat to Chris Eubank Jr. He subsequently spent seven days unconscious at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, and awoke on Saturady when he was able to “acknowledge the voices of loved ones”. By Sunday it is reported that he was speaking with them. No further information has been given regarding Blackwell’s health or long-term recovery.

In their statement, Hennessey pointed out: “Contrary to early reports, his bleed was outside the brain – on the skull, in fact – and was minor enough for there to be no need to operate.”

They also added:

“On behalf of Nick, his family, and very close friends, we’d like to thank everyone for their continued support and well-wishes. It has been overwhelming at times and has certainly not gone unnoticed.
