This weekend, the queen of New York City’s underground, Venus X, is bringing back GHE20G0TH1K—the trailblazing party she started six years ago that came to define the dark sounds and look of this city’s fringe. Featuring the New York debut of bounce legend Sissy Nobby, the lineup also includes DJ sets from Fade to Mind’s Total Freedom, MikeQ, Ma Nguzu, and Divoli S’vere.
GHE20G0TH1K was where cutting-edge fashion, art, and nightlife collided; more importantly, it was an important space where black, gay, and minorities created their own culture outside of the mainstream. Soon, celebrities like M.I.A., Diplo, and Alexander Wang started showing up, and before long, the party had gone from underground to talk of the town. Venus X shut it down last fall, telling Complex, “I want bigger problems, I want bigger issues, and I want bigger spaces and responsibilities. I don’t want to throw warehouse parties into my 30s. It’s way too much work for little rewards.”

Saturday’s event, part of Red Bull Music Academy Festival in New York, will gather the homies for a one-night-only celebration of a bygone era. In the lead-up to the party, Venus is releasing free remixes from the GHE20G0TH1K family, including this one: a remix of Rihanna’s raspy anthem “Bitch Better Have My Money” by Divoli S’vere. The Harlem-born, Atlanta-based producer and rapper is a member of QweenBeat, an integral collective in New York’s ballroom scene that MikeQ is also a part of. Listen to the track above, and check out scenes from QweenBeat’s legendary ballroom party Vogue Knights in our documentary “Icy Lake.”
