Edgar Wright Is Already Talking About a ‘Baby Driver’ Sequel

Sony is already trying to coax Baby back behind the wheel for a sequel to Baby Driver, Edgar Wright’s latest hit about a fast teen with tinnitus that dominated the box office during the July Fourth holiday weekend, Slashfilm reports. The charming heist film is already on track to be Wright’s biggest domestic theatrical release, so it’s no big surprise that the studio wants another one. The real surprise is that he’s mulling the idea over at all.

Wright told Empire during a recent podcast interview that Sony has approached him about a sequel, and that he’s down with the idea. “The studio has asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to,” Wright said, “because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters.”

Wright’s filmmaking tastes have always leaned toward individual, stand-alone stories. The closest he’s come to a series was the Cornetto Trilogy—Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End—but those are strictly spiritual successors with an ice cream through-line.

“Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go,” he continued. “I think with Baby Driver, there’s more you can do in that realm. I sort of have an idea that if you did another [film] you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way, so he’s not the apprentice anymore.”

It’s not totally clear that means—is Baby going to become a criminal kingpin? Is he going to wind up on the other side of the law? Is he going to start a speed-racing crime family with that waitress named after a Beck song?—but it’s definitely intriguing. If it does happen, Anthony Bourdain won’t be pleased about the news, though.
