Here’s the Real Story Behind the Deli that Magically Summoned Liam Neeson

Yesterday morning, Big Star Sandwich Co. in Vancouver posted a sign outside of its storefront stating, “Liam Neeson eats here for free.” Little did they know how much the action star likes free stuff.

“Our manager Matt is a Liam Neeson superfan,” Big Star owner Alex Johrden told MUNCHIES. “Matt’s had his finger on the pulse and heard that Liam would be down in this area filming a new movie called Hard Powder. So, he put the sign out as a joke and at around 11 AM, and around 6:30 (PM), Liam Neeson walked through the door.”

Sadly, that timing turned out to be a bit of a bummer for Matt, Johrden explains. “Unfortunately, Matt had gone home at this point and did not get to meet Liam Neeson, so we’re hoping he comes back,” Johrden explained. But that didn’t stop Big Star from taking to Facebook to declare, “Holy f**k, it worked! #LiamNeeson.”

All in all, it seems like Neeson was a pretty cool guy, albeit in-character and demanding what he was promised. “He walked up to the counter and, in his Taken voice, said, ‘Where’s my free sandwich?’”

Tongue planted firmly in cheek, Neeson finally admitted that he couldn’t hang around, but Johrden is hoping for a rain cheque, at the very least for Matt’s sake. “He didn’t have time to eat, so we’re hoping that he comes back and takes us up on the offer and Matt gets to say, ‘Hi.’”

In the meantime, Big Star created a sandwich that is an ode to the actor, with ingredients that are appropriately action-packed. “We’ve named our current feature sandwich after him—we’re calling it the ‘Neeson.’ It’s got a lot of beef, a one-two punch of bacon and hickory sticks, and spice that will get revenge on you tomorrow.”
