Illustration Timelapse Inks NYC in Under 3 Minutes

New York City rises in just under three minutes in artist Patrick Vale’s illustrated reincarnation, Colossus. Compressed into an inky timelapse by animation studio Big Animal, a month of the illustrator’s un-ergonomic work on the city’s skyline breezes by, set to a crescendoing piano track by John Barber. Similar to his timelapse from the vantage of the Empire State Building outlook, Vale’s drawing fast-forwards into a frenzy of outlining, shading, and infinitesimally tiny detailing based on material gathered one chilly afternoon, spent “making sketches from the vantage point,” he tells The Creators Project. “[…] Then [I] took video and pictures. I referred to all of them constantly, the video was good to reference as you see the city alive and it reminds you of being up there. I like to bring my location drawings into the finished piece.”
