Insult to Injury: Week Ending 3/21

Andrew W.K. in his male modeling days. Welcome to Insult to Injury, the place where the Noisey editors gather every week to talk about what they’ve been listening to. As you can probably tell from the fact that half the office has been listening to YG, it is getting weirdly intimate around here and even our menstrual cycles have synced up.

YG feat. Schoolboy Q & Jay Rock – “I Just Wanna Party”
Okay, so it’s probably not the best look for me to write about the same artist that Drewgazi’s tackling above, but IDGAF, because this YG album is exactly what I’ve needed to shake me of my current indie rock haze. In particular, “I Just Wanna Party” delivers some of the sharpest verses of the album—and we get a guest spot from SchoolBoy Q that makes us all wonder where the hell, exactly, this type of flow was on Man of the Year (even though I, personally, fuck with that album quite a bit). Anyway, this song is great and My Krazy Life is a great album and I can’t wait for it to be warm outside so I can blast this song on a rooftop while drinking a gazillion beers and eating meat that I’ve proudly grilled the shit out of.

TEEN – “Not For Long”
Earlier this week, I spent the hours of 2 AM to 3.30 AM listening to music in bed with my headphones on. It made me feel about 14 years old. I should’ve lit some candles and incense. If only I still had that Nevermind poster, I would’ve shed some tears. That night, I was listening to a weird combo of Tourist and Wild Beasts, but I’m always banging on about them, so instead, consider TEEN. The first cut from their upcoming record, The Way and Color, (out April 22) is nimble and plinkety sweet, the vocals pulled right to fore, with synths that remind me of the weird synthesizer chords used in Heathers, and boings that are very “Ashes to Ashes” Bowie. Oh and that chorus is straight killer.

The Chiffons – “One Fine Day”
Here’s a little secret about your old pal, Dan. (That’s me, I’m Dan, hi.) A lot of times, I’ll come home from a long day of writing about punk and hardcore stuff on the internet, I’ll take a shower because working in the internet mines all day gets you filthy, and I’ll just relax and listen to some compilations of golden oldies of the 60s. There’s one on Spotify called Girl Groups of the 60s that’s my favorite because let’s just face it, that was one of the best eras ever for music and let’s not pretend otherwise. I think this song is my favorite. It makes me feel like a very pretty girl. Er, MAN! It makes me feel like a VERY PRETTY MAN.

Kevin Gates – “Roaming Around”
One of my absolute favourite artists of the last year was Kevin Gates. people make a really big deal about YG and Freddie Gibbs et al bringing back “gangsta rap” but Kevin Gates does it without making you feel like you’re listening to a gangsta rap. Kevin seems like a chill bro who like vampire novels and selling drugs, and the way he’s able to craft songs that cause you to feel both admiration and fear at the same damn time is pretty special. His newest mixtape By Any Means was released earlier this week and may be my favourite project of 2014. It literally forced me to stop playing Cocaine Pinata and My Krazy Life, even though both of those albums are magnificent in their own right. The opening track off By Any Means makes specific mention to “Roaming Around,” a J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League assisted song that essentially fizzled out once it was released into the mainstream. It’s still hella fucking pretty though.
