”It’s all bullshit:” Danny Green On The Weight Debate

West Australian Boxer Danny Green has lashed out at suggestions he will be the beneficiary of the weight class he and Anthony Mundine will fight in later tonight.

“Weight is no issue, I am on weight,” Green said.

“That weight advantage if he (Mundine) wants to come in at a lighter weight that’s up to him…The weight has been set, he played footy (NRL), first grade football heavier than I have ever weighed.

“So he has been a bigger man than me naturally before and that’s his choice…So they’ll be maybe 3kgs difference when the bell goes it’s all weight talk, it’s all bullshit,” he said.

At the weigh-in earlier today Mundine came in at 79.6 kilograms, 3.26 kilograms less than Green. Green’s straight, power-punching could prove deadly in this his natural weight class. Indeed, his former trainer and legendary Australian boxer, Jeff Fenech, said the fight should be called off due to safety concerns.

“If Danny Green hits him with a very clean punch, Anthony could face a serious health problem,” Fenech told Sky Sports Radio, a day after the fight was announced.

“I believe that the fight shouldn’t be allowed to go ahead. Forget the money.”

In response, Mundine’s manager, Khoder Nasser, has organised for the top neurosurgeon in the country to be ringside for the fight.

Mundine has typically used footwork, fast-hands and superior mobility to duck, weave and pick off opponents. Green on the other hand favours straight, hard punching and will relish the opportunity to fight in his natural weight class. For their last fight ten years ago, it was Green who was forced to shed weight to meet Mundine, a move which looked to detract from the formidable strength and power of his punching on the night. Tonight would appear to play into the Green’s hands, though building weight and strength, as Mundine has been asked to do, is a lot easier than shedding it.
