Monthly event series Course of Time turns three this week, and as a reverse-birthday present of sorts, they’ve decided to share the love and premiere a brand new release by this week’s headliners, Act!on. It’s a remix of “Move That Dope” by Future featuring Pharrell, Pusha T. and Casino, and it’s come just in time to get you warmed up for this month’s event. And because they’re just those kind of stand-up guys, they’ve also shared a brand new mix complete with unreleased original tracks by Act!on as well.
Course of Time has turned itself into the type of night that DJs clamour to come and play, and local heroes regularly step up to the decks solo from their larger projects to have some fun and show off their skills. Dinamo Azari, Alixander III and Dylan from Zeds Dead have been known to join regular Hunter Siegel on stage. But with no set agenda other than showcasing the ‘best’ in local dance music and a commitment to meticulous programming, Course of Time has been able to evolve into the kind of party that people show up to on the regular, not just because of this week’s headliner. The combination of the laid back, just-here-to-have-a-good-time crowd, noticeably devoid of high heels or pressed collared shirts, and the unique sounds that are brought to the floor is what makes this night such a breath of fresh air. More importantly, it’s an event that other DJs and producers make a point not to miss.

This Friday will mark their 40th edition. Resident DJ and curator Mr. Charlton will be headlining the show with his new project with Kid MK (former Red Bull Thre3style champion), Act!on, with support from Bwana, Kings of the North and Serena Passion for an all-Toronto line-up of dance music. Be sure to check out their stellar artwork for the event—each flyer is designed by Phil Armson to create a unique visual aesthetic for the series, which reflects the close attention paid to the curation of the event itself.
The event series’ founders David King, Omar Al-Samadi and Alex Charlton (Mr. Charlton) are no strangers to Toronto’s dance music scene. David’s legacy includes being one of the founders of SalaciousSound, launching the hugely successful series Bassmentality, which arguably launched the careers of acts like Zed’s Dead and elevated Toronto’s bass and dubstep scene, and his most recent venture, Receiver, a new start-up which provides a platform for all of your streamed audio and video content. Omar Al-Samadi has managed many notable Toronto acts, including Michael Imperial and Alixander III’s new mod-rock project called The Cruelty Party, and most recently founded Rare Beef, a record label devoted to presenting emerging electronic music talent. Meanwhile Mr. Charlton has been drumming up some serious international love, he’s also played along side with artists such as Zeds Dead, Boys Noize, Duke Dumont and Disclosure, and focusing on making waves with Act!on.
Always ones to think outside the box, Mr. Charlton and Kid MK are trying out a new tactic for building up a fan base for Act!on: Instead of taking to the old channels, like fan pages on Facebook, the duo are looking to build a more direct, personal connection with their proper fans, and have sent their latest track, a “Reimagination” of MNEK’s vocal cover of Disclosure’s White Noise, to anyone who requested it via their own website, either as a 320 MP3 or Wav file. What Course of Time and Act!on both seem to have in common is a refreshing commitment to providing their audience with the best music, the best experience that they can possibly provide.
The Course of Time 3YRs party will be held on August 22, at Supermarket in Kensington Market.
