Dancer Defies Gravity with Stunning 3D Projections

Once again, interpretative dance and 3D projection mapping prove to be a match made in heaven. Levitation is a collaborative showcase between dancer and choreographer Anna Abalikhina and Russian light artists/3D projection specialists, Sila Sveta. The Los Angeles based multimedia design company behind the Epicenter light show and other large-scale 3D projection projects broadcast their latest performance this winter during the second season of the Kultura Channels’ “Big Ballet” program.

Pinned up against a wall, dancer Jura Chulkov moves like a puppet on a string in tandem with Sila Sveta’s mindblowing visuals. The dance is choreographed in sync to the music of composer Mitya Vikhornov, with a variety of 3D-projected visual depth illusions that will make you question which way is up. Using what we can only assume to be a complex sort of pulley system, Chulkov maneuvers his body through this gravity defying routine, alternating between a two-planed platform stage that’s connected at a 90 degree angle. According to the video’s description, all of the visuals projected during the performance were rendered on the fly in real time, without any post-production. Check out Levitation in action below:
