My dude, I swear to God, if I hear “Lil’ Kim is back!” one more time I am going to lose it. Lil’ Kim is not back, because she never really went away. She released a mixtape last year remember? It had ten songs on it. It was called Lil’ Kim Season – which is perhaps a more apt way of describing her ebb-and-flow way of releasing music. Let’s not call it a comeback. Let’s call it another season.
Rant aside (I didn’t realise I felt so strongly about Lil’ Kim?) the queen of rap has released brand new material, and as predicted, it is hard as nails in a brilliant, performative kind of way. The track is called “Took Us a Break” and it comes with a black and white visual that sees her stomping around and flicking her hair and looking every inch like the sort of artist that has earned her dues over the course of two decades.

“I was raised in the school of hard knocks,” she raps, over the sort of beat that should be played out those almost painfully bass-y car speakers that you can hear from three streets away. “These bitches is class clowns / Giving y’all my old clothes, my old flows like hand-me-downs / I see y’all watching my Snap / Trying to see what else you could jack.” So yeah, put your lighters up and watch the whole thing above.
