Dozens of musicians including RóIsín Murphy, JD Twitch, and Daphni a.k.a. Caribou feature on a forthcoming 42-track benefit compilation for the victims of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. The release was curated and organized by former label manager at DFA records Kris Peterson, and also features work by the likes of Gobby, Peter Gordon, Bookworms, Patricia, and more.
“This compilation has been birthed due to a tragic event, but I do not want the compilation to be a souvenir of a tragedy,” said Petersen on the Bandcamp page for the release. “I am instead aiming for a positive document of the beauty that exists in the minds, bodies, and spirits of our small, but global community. Many of the folks contributing have all played in, lived in, and truly loved DIY spaces like Ghost Ship.”

Peterson explains that the title of Lives Through Magic is adapted from a quote by NYC artist Keith Haring: “Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic.”
The release is being offered in three formats: digital, double cassette featuring two bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are “Dream Yourself Awake (Shinedoe Remix)” by Pantha Du Prince and “Narcissus” by Rósín Murphy. Some tracks are available to stream now, below.
All proceeds from the compilation will be split between Oakland’s Gray Area Foundation For The Arts and the national Trans Assistance Project.
Lives Through Magic will be released on January 31.
