Matt Harvey Misses Mandatory Team Workout

Man, the Mets sure have been a great story this season, right? They are preparing for their first postseason appearance since 2006, when Endy Chavez gave fans a glimmer of hope only to have the Cardinals rip their hearts out through their throats. Since then, fans have been treated to some of the most spectacular late-season collapses in memory, plenty of room to stretch out in a new stadium, and a Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme that turned the roster into a loose confederation of theoretical replacement level players.

But this year is different. Meaningful contributions from trade deadline acquisitions and a group of young pitchers have the Mets ready to make some noise. The only real controversy the team faced all year was a minor disagreement over Matt Harvey’s workload down the stretch. Oh, and one other little thing, just today, actually: Matt Harvey missed a mandatory workout at CitiField. It’s probably fine!

See? Totally, totally fine.

GM Sandy Alderson told reporters he had no idea where he was, or why he didn’t show up, and that it was obviously unexcused. Shortly after David Wright spoke to reporters, Matt Harvey stepped to the podium for a brief statement where he simply said he “messed up.” Adding to this most very Mets of controversies, Terry Collins actually did seem to know what the deal was with Harvey: he was stuck in traffic.

Why Alderson didn’t know, or chose not to let on that he knew is something we’ll get to chat about until the Mets play on Friday. So that should be fun.
