The Indian River Lagoon in Florida was overrun with monstrous algae blooms in 2016, devastating local wildlife and releasing potentially dangerous bacteria into the environment. Marty Baum, a sixth-generation Floridian, is director of the nonprofit Indian Riverkeeper. He spends his days battling algae and politicians to save the lagoon, in the hope that his grandkids aren’t left dealing with the same mess.
