Nick Murphy – the artist formerly known as Chet Faker – says that his new short film Missing Link is an abstract narrative of his musical journey.
Speaking to Noisey from New York City, where he’s been working on the follow up to his 2014 debut album Built on Glass, Murphy says the film – a collaboration with filmmaker and musician Johann Rashid – was based from real experience. “Missing Link is quite a literal title in that the film is what was missing from where I was trying to get and where I was. It’s about looking inward and finding the kinks.”

A trailer for the film, that includes new music from the producer, begins and ends with a windswept Murphy walking toward a rollercoaster in a tattered t-shirt. “It was actually my favourite shirt, I wore it on Laneway Festival”, he says when asked about the shirt’s ragged condition.
Murphy, who will be appearing at Sydney Opera House as part of VIVID, says the film was a true a collaboration and that working with Rashid, a friend from Melbourne, came naturally. “Often you work with directors and they are like, “What the fuck does this musician know about film?” but with Johann it was easy.”
Rashid, who as well as creating videos for Parquet Courts and My Disco, has his own music project In Swarm, and has just signed to Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records.
Watch the trailer for Missing Link below and looks out for a NOISEY feature interview with Murphy soon.
