Hands are strange, as we’re reminded in these touchy-feely drawings of human appendages paired with plants by San Francisco-based scientific illustrator Noel Badges Pugh. With a degree in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and a master’s in Illustration from UC Santa Cruz, lately he’s turned his attention away from diagrams of bees and colorfully-rendered flowers to rippling reproductions of the human form.
Pugh captures the, “Woah, look at my hands,” weirdness that palms, knuckles, and phalanges often inspire after a large bong rip. In a series posted to Instagram over the last two months, he pairs them with soft flora for a synesthetic effect. Your fingertips tingle when they see their watercolor counterparts brush a flower petal or the tip of a thorn. Occasionally Pugh dips into full-on surrealsim, drawing digits that drip like raindrops or adding eyes to fern leaves. In his bio he calls it “artwork with a more psychedelic perspective, citing nature and dreams as his primary inspiration. “All’s created with an utmost appreciation for the details and structure of each subject,” he adds.
