You may or may not know that at Noisey we call our sense of taste “genre agnostic.” Meaning we firmly believe every type of music should mix together, even at the same time. “Genre agnosticism” was exemplified last night at our South By Southwest collaboration with the JanSport Bonfire Sessions.

The night started off with a performance by San Francisco’s Day Wave a.k.a. Jackson Phillips—who makes the perfect kind of happy-sad indie pop. We’ve been writing about him for the best part of a year so he was a no brainer, not only for this showcase, but also a recent Noisey Next feature. Right after was Philadelphia’s indie Bandcamp megastar Alex G, followed by another great Philly export, Beach Slang, with their nostalgic, heart-on-sleeve brand of rock. From there, Huntsville’s Mick Jenkins came through with his atmospheric, introspective rhymes.
Then it was time for headliner: Oakland R&B star Kehlani. A girl who five years ago was trying out for America’s Got Talent and is now a solo star who did it all DIY and has a 2016 Grammy nomination under her belt. And she’s still only 20. It was pretty sweet to host a show with the weird range of the artists we’ve been writing about in the past year, all on one stage. Check out the pictures below —and see if you can come up with a decent caption for the Future chin stroke shot.
