Some artists draw on newsprint, some on cardstock or construction paper or a tablet. Marc Evan, a.k.a., Marc Maniac, draws on pumpkins. Together with co-founder Chris Soria, he started Maniac Pumpkin Carvers to elevate the humble gourd to high art. Case and point, this rendition of Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, the latest of six spooky collaborations between Maniac and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In years previous, the group has brandished their knives to create a pumpkin-colored Starry Night, a version of Henri Matisse’s Blue Nude that’s decidedly orange, and Edvard Munch’s Halloween-ready painting, The Scream. Maniac has also made pumpkins for Queens Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum, The New Yorker, and Alex Grey, and offer their custom-carving services to anyone who’s got the cash.
