“Planet Earth” Footage Gets A Tripped-Out Makeover

David Attenborough’s Planet Earth may not have been overtly psychedelic, but the documentary series brought viewers on a mesmerizing voyage through the world from the perspective of good ‘ol Mother Nature—an organic lady who is pretty trippy in her own right. After all, head-spinning fractals and kaleidoscopic patterns can be found just about anywhere in nature. Video artist Idam Adam was inspired by Attenborough’s “Mountains” episode, and created a tribute that warps the footage into something not far off from—but definitely as far out as—the album art by mind melter Leif Podhajsky.

The final result is 42-minutes of three panels that emit swirling, bending visualizations, equipped with animal noises, floating animal heads, explosions, and so on—though blink and you’ll miss the original footage. “I found that due to the choice of source material, the video takes up a narrative of it’s own that the viewer can assume for themselves,” Adam said in an email. “It doesn’t have to be watched in its entirety to work, and every frame is unique and offers an interesting composition.”
