Claudio Ranieri Gets The Sack

He took the team from zeros to heroes and back to zeros again.

Arguably one of the most breathtaking stories that ever graced English football is Leicester City F.C. winning the English Premiere League in 2015/2016. Giving the world unforgettable heroes like Jamie Vardy, then a 29-year-old former factory worker who broke the consecutive scoring record. But the modern game has no place for nostalgia, as Ranieri got the sack today.

Ranieri seemed to conjure a feat of magic last year. The end of the season saw Tottenham Hotspurs draw then-champions Chelsea F.C in Stamford Bridge and Leicester city square exploded in celebrations; Leicester City, English champions. At odds of 5000-1, it was a miracle. A miracle that resonated 11.764 km away, right down to the cities of Indonesia.

"I started supporting LCFC because the club was an underdog filled with less well-known players such as Vardy and Kante. Before last season, who knew about these guys? Leicester was  supported by late bloomers and Manchester City rejects like Kasper Scheimecel," said Zulfikar Triadi, spokesperson of Indonesia LCFC fan club.

Ranieri was a big part of the success. His comfortable and deflecting smile on the sidelines helped to keep the team calm and the dream alive. Nobody took them seriously, even when the impossible seemed to be happening.

But less than a year later, Ranieri is gone. Leicester have had a miserable season so far. The defending champions are facing a relegation battle. The magic partnership of Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy has disappeared. Throughout 2017, Leicester haven't been able to score a single goal, let alone win a league match.

Their journey in Champions League still retains some of the element of surprise from last year. They managed to come out on top in their group and only lost 2-1 at Sevilla's home turf on the first leg of the second round. There was still a chance to dust off some of that old magic in the Champions League.

But  the management of Leicester are just as impatient as any other club. They decided to dump Ranieri—who once uttered his wish to retire with the club— without  giving him a chance to finish the season. It's almost as if the club had forgotten what Ranieri gave them last season.

Had Leicester not  outdone themselves last year, their standing in the league this season would be seen as something normal. Leicester is a team that is used to fighting to stay in the Premier League. However, since the club had tasted the sweetness of being champions, they seemed to get carried away.

Adios, Claudio.
