Rivers Cuomo Played a Solo Show and Covered ‘Dookie’-Era Green Day Twice

Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo is no stranger to a cover version or two, so it follows that when he played a solo show in Chicago on Monday night, his set was strewn with them. Though Toto’s “Africa” was still nowhere to be seen (at this point he’s just being stubborn), according to the setlist the show took fans down Memory Lane a little, stopping by the Smashing Pumpkins (“Today” and “1979”), Pixies (“Where Is My Mind”), REO Speedwagon (“Can’t Fight This Feeling,” obviously), and Green Day, with two Dookie-era covers, “Basket Case” and “When I Come Around.”

Cuomo – wearing a puffa jacket for a portion of the set in a steadfast commitment to Dad Fashion – also played a number of older Weezer tracks at the solo show, which took place at Chicago’s Beat Kitchen. Happily, some intrepid and very committed fan took videos of most of it, which we’ll share with you here, below. Enjoy!
