Greta Gerwig has proven herself as an actor and screenwriter again and again and again. But for the first time, she’s climbed behind the camera for her solo directorial debut, Lady Bird—and it looks like it won’t disappoint.
The movie was met with a veritable wave of adulation when it premiered at Telluride last weekend. The Hollywood Reporter said the film is “observant [and] poignantly personal” and Variety called it “miraculous.” Now, A24 has released the film’s first trailer, so we can get a look at Lady Bird in all its miraculousness or whatever.

The film, written and directed by Gerwig, is set in early-2000s Sacramento and based loosely on her own time in high school. Brooklyn and Atonement star Saoirse Ronan plays the titular character and Gerwig surrogate, Lady Bird (no relation to LBJ), with the stellar Laurie Metcalf as Ronan’s mother. It’s a time of serious change in Lady Bird’s life—she’s discovering her sexuality, struggling to prep for college, and bristling against the strictures of her new Catholic school—and Gerwig’s film explores how she tackles it all.
This isn’t exactly Gerwig’s first time directing. She co-directed the slight, mumblecore movie Nights and Weekends back in 2008 with Joe Swanberg, but Lady Bird looks like a much deeper, more complex film, and it’s the first time Gerwig’s been in the director’s seat alone. Hopefully it won’t be her last.
