Scene Report

Hey everyone reading Vice. I’m excited I get to do a column this issue. I still think Vice is kind of a Big Brother rip-off but beggars can’t be choosers. I make a zine in Columbus, Ohio, called Rye Zine (a hilarious pun, I know—maybe I should change the name to something even more hilarious, like Epicly Lame or something). I try my best to cover the scene around these parts, though Smelly Curb zine does a way better job.

Anyway, the best skater in Columbus right now is Chad Knight. He just switched from Evol to Maple and I think he’s gonna blow up once he moves to San Diego. He’s also on Duke shoes, which make really stylish kicks, hopefully they’ll be around awhile. There’s also a little kid who lives in the projects next to Dodge Skatepark named Chaz McGee who can do frontside 540s. I think he may be the next Brian Patch.

Phil Shao blasts a phat one at Dodge, in Columbus, Ohio.
The music scene here is pretty awesome. I just saw the New Bomb Turks. A band of old dudes called Guided by Voices opened and they are easily my new favorite band. In fact, I bought their records Vampire on Titus and Propeller and my friends and I started a cover band, basically. We have our own songs too, but we usually just play their songs. Luscious Jackson also recently came through. They’re like a chick version of the Beastie Boys. My favorite record right now is Weed Forestin’ by Sebadoh. It’s Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr.’s side band and it’s way better than Dinosaur Jr.

There is a house here called the Neil House that straightedge-type bands play at. I like going there to secretly drink and watch those kind of bands. All the bands have funny names with numbers in them, like Kerosene 454, the Delta 72, or Slant 6 or something. The dudes all wear chokers.

That’s me!
So anyway, I’m really sick of the big-pants little-wheels thing and I’m glad we’re finally getting away from that shit (though a few years ago I was guilty too). This summer a lot of awesome skaters have come through Dodge. Phil Shao, Tim Brauch, Sam Hitz, Josh Beagle, and Steve Olson (I read somewhere that there used to be another guy with that name, but this was a young nerdy guy).

Well, thanks for reading. If you want to contact me or buy a zine for a dollar, my address is 3000 Oakridge Rd., Columbus, Ohio, 43221. Bye!
