Seinfeld’s Puddy Showed Up at the Devils Playoff Game and It Was Glorious

If you didn’t know, the actor who plays die-hard New Jersey Devils supporter David Puddy in Seinfeld is a real-life, face-painting fan.

Yeah, that’s right.

Patrick Warburton, the New Jersey Native and the actor who played Puddy in the legendary sitcom, was in attendance—face paint and all—for Game 4 of the Devils’ first-round series against the Lightning on Thursday and, at first, he was remaining pretty low key.

His cover didn’t last for long, however, as the team posted a video during the second period of a towel-waving Puddy ripping off his Devils Jersey to reveal the “D” painted on his chest before firing up the crowd with a few solid screams into the mic.

“We’re the Devils, we can beat anybody! Ahhh!”

In the epic 1995 episode of Seinfeld titled “The Face Painter” Jerry gets weirded out when Puddy—Elaine’s goofy on-and-off boyfriend—shows up at a Devils game with his face painted in New Jersey’s red and green colours. Because he is so worked up after the game, he convinces a pastor from El Salvador that he really is the devil.

Many parts of the episode, and Puddy’s fan antics in general, have lived on in hockey circles—especially with those in the Devils’ organization. Former New Jersey goaltender Scott Wedgewood had a fantastic rendition of Warburton’s character painted on his mask in 2015, while Adam Henrique posted a splendid photo of the team’s warm-up shirts at the start of this season which featured Puddy’s pained face across a graphic that read “Let’s Go Devils.”

And, of course, let’s not forget the George Costanza-themed Pads Of Seduction—a set of goalie gear designed by Henrique in a contest for Devils netminder Keith Kinkaid.

Oh, on a less important note, the Devils are down 3-1 in the series after dropping Game 4 at home on Wednesday. Maybe they can’t “beat anybody” after all, but damn do the Devils have their Seinfeld game on point.
