Indie rock’s most gentle star, Sufjan Stevens, performed his Call Me By Your Name song “Mystery of Love” at tonight’s Oscars ceremony. Backed by a band that included St Vincent and Moses Sumney, Sufjan played a delicate, shortened version of his Best Original Song-nominated track.
Despite only running for little over 90 seconds, the performance still felt deeply emotional, bringing to mind some of the beautiful scenes of young love and peach fucking in Call Me By Your Name. Clad in an patterned pink suit, Sufjan was wearing noticeably fewer hats than usual during the performance. He performed in front of an image of a palazzo, in a nod to the film’s Northern Italian setting.

Sufjan contributed three songs to the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack, with “Visions of Gideon” and a new remix of The Age of Adz’s “Futile Devices” appearing in the film alongside “Mystery of Love.”
Other nominees in the Best Original Song race include Miguel for Coco’s ‘Remember Me’ and Mary J Blige for Mudbound’s ‘Mighty River’.
