Vince Staples is one of the most entertaining rappers of this generation. His interviews lead to thinkpieces that cause debates about the merits of 90s hip-hop, his commentary leaves NBA players terrified of their fashion choices, and his music depicts scenes that people outside of the West Coast can never imagine. He’s also a rapper who takes a lot of pride in pairing his songs with strong visuals, which is the case with his newest track “Lift Me Up.” Continuing the trend we saw in 2015 of LA rappers levitating in their videos which started with Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” Staples shows us his neighbourhood and his ascension into heaven for the standout track from Summertime ’06.
