Viral Style: Space Capes, Space Sandals, And Sci-Fi Fashion Shoots

TRICKED-OUT DESIGNER GIFS OF THE WEEK

Diesel’s artistic director Nicola Formichetti has teamed up with photographer Nick Knight (y’know, the guy who shot THAT Kimye vid), creating a series of uber-slick GIFs for the denim brand’s Pre-Fall 2014 campaign, The Neo-Neoclassic. The collab follows the success of last year’s #DIESELTRIBUTE campaign, where the duo shot and edited GIFs with an iPhone—only this time around, classic and digital aesthetics are fused with inspiration borrowed from art history. Creatives model a range of Diesel garms like leather bikers and dark denim skinnies, as images are manipulated with warped effects or futurist visions—Formichetti calls this style “pop Picasso.”

SPACE HUNTER APPAREL OF THE WEEK

American designer Mark McNairy has made a welcomed return to fashion with a new collection created alongside Woolrich Woolen Mills, based around a ‘hunting in space’ theme. Amongst some minimal outerwear and sharp sports garms, our fave piece has to be the flashy gold space blanket, crafted from thin heat-reflective plastic sheeting. Might not be the easiest thing to wear, but you’ll definitely make a statement when you’re styling it out at the bar.

SMART JEWELLERY OF THE WEEK

Wearable tech jewellery is getting bigger in the fashion world, offering wearers a subtle, stylish way to upgrade their look without resorting to awkward designs. This week we’re checking out Ringly, a brand about to drop a new Bluetooth-enabled ring collection for Autumn. Crafted with a combination of 18K matte gold 3 micron plating and semi-precious stones, these rings can easily by worked into your outfit—and with the use of a linked smartphone app, they’re even able to keep you connected with your calls, texts, emails, social media and more.

CUSTOMIZABLE TECH BRACELET OF THE WEEK

In other accessories news, check out the NEX Band, a wearable bracelet that allows the wearer to customize the design with five different ‘Mods’ (aka kitted-out tech charms). Add-ons include fitness-tracking capabilities and coded message transfers to other NEX users, while others are just there to look good with different colours. Base and Token technology connects the Mods to a cloud system, updating information in real time—plus, the device is also compatible with iOS and Android.

FUTURISTIC EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK

Really loving this fresh sci-fi style editorial for Spanish fashion mag Metal, shot by Frederik Heyman and styled by Santi Rodriguez for the Spring/Summer 2014 issue. Male models Max Lester and Toby Leonard get a digital makeover in luxe designs by the likes of Raf Simons, Givenchy and Prada, complete with surreal alien landscapes and next-gen virtual distortions.

SPACE AGE SANDALS OF THE WEEK

NASA have released details of a brand new sandal designed by 3D motion tracking specialists Xsens, which manages to fuse forward-thinking technology with what has to be the ugliest shoe design known to man (and mankind). The footwear comes equipped with sensors that measure pressure, designed to record data on astronauts as they work out on Earth and in space. The idea is to help NASA develop more effective exercise equipment to prevent bone density and muscle strength weakening in zero-gravity conditions… but man, talk about a clunky fit.
