Fly into Space on This Virtual Reality Swing Set

An augmented swing that takes you to space sounds like an invention from a Miyazaki movie. In the hands of German artists, Thi Binh Minh Nguyen and Christin Marczinzik, it’s a (virtual) reality. Their installation, aptly titled Swing, sends you to a watercolored world using Oculus Rift, a Kinect camera, and—of course—a swing.

The swing acts as a controller, letting users move to and fro during the slow ascent into space. “For us, the swing has always been a special fascination,” Marczinzik explains in the project’s description. “As children, we were playing around it,” she continues. “We felt disconnected from reality, weightless and free. Swing brings this feeling back and makes a dream come true: the dream of flying.”
