It seems that the UK's resurgence in illegal raves is showing no signs of slowing, with an event in Barking on Saturday night ending in violent clashes between ravers and police.

It is thought clashes started at around 10pm when police arrived at the Thames Road site and attempted to shut the party down. Reports have generally estimated the number of ravers in attendance to be around 1000 people, with some reports claiming as many as 2000. According to the Metropolitan Police Service the clashes resulted in nine police officers requiring medical attention as a result of missiles being thrown. The following commotion, described as a "large scale disorder" by Barking and Dagenham police, appears to have involved an extensive police presence involving riot gear, dogs and at least one police helicopter.

The Metropolitan have since released the following statement:

"At approximately 9.45pm on Saturday, June 18, police were informed of a large number of people gathering for an unlicensed event at a building in Thames Road, Barking.Officers attended the scene and found approximately 1,000 people inside the venue and around 1,000 outside the venue. Missiles were thrown at officers. Eight male officers and one female officer - two sergeants, two dog handlers and five police constables - received injuries. Four of the male officers were treated in hospital. Their injuries are not serious and they have since been discharged. The majority of those in attendance have been dispersed and the building is now empty."

The response is not unlike the scenes of violence following an illegal rave in Lincolnshire last summer. It is clear from this weekend's events that the police will continue to pursue heavy-handed tactics in response to illegal parties.
