Prince Released a Surprise Album Over the Weekend

You can stream HITNRUN PHASE TWO now via TIDAL.

Pop and experimental music legend Prince has had a pretty eventful couple of years. 2014 saw the simultaneous release of a collaborative album with 3RDEYEGIRL, Plectrumelectrum, and a solo record, Art Official Age—both coming after the artist had not put out a full-length since 2010's 20Ten. Back in September, he kept up the pace and released HITNRUN Phase One exclusively via TIDAL (a reversal of his decision to remove his catalogue from streaming services earlier in the year). Then, this past Saturday, he took us all by surprise and released HITNRUN PHASE TWO without any warning, again through TIDAL.

According to the press release, the album was "recorded fully in analog … over a nearly four-year period—gradually adding songs until the sequence was perfected and ready for release. A 16-member horn section is featured throughout the album, combining Prince's NPG HORNZ and Minneapolis' HORNHEADS, the latter a frequent addition to his larger studio ensemble."
