The sky is sunny. Let’s lend it, spend it, send it rolling along!

Coupe, confidence unabashed, dives straight into another verse from “We’re in the Money,” a hit song from The Gold Diggers of 1933, later reprised in the popular Broadway musical 42nd Street.

We’re in the money. The sky is sunny. Let’s lend it, spend it, send it rolling along!

He pauses. However, it seems Coupe’s wealth ditty is not yet over.

Doo, do, doo, do, do, doo, doo.

In a moment of late-capitalist perfection, the exec of the UK supermarket was caught singing about making loads of cash, just moments before a press conference discussing a major merger between ASDA and Sainsbury’s. Announced yesterday, the deal sees the creation of the biggest supermarket group in Britain, comprising of 2,800 stores across the country with collective sales of £51 billion.

According to the Guardian, Coupe said that the 30-second performance was a way to compose himself before his interview with ITV News.

“It was an unfortunate choice of song, from the musical 42nd Street, which I saw last year,” said Coupe. “I apologise if I have offended anyone.”

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s explained that, actually, singing a song about having lots of money had no relations to the before a press conference about getting lots of money: “We all know these songs stay in your head. To attach any wider meaning to this innocent, personal moment is preposterous.”
