Break-ups. We’ve all more or less been involved in one at some point in our lives. If you haven’t been involved in one, here’s a very basic summary: receiving end = terrible, giving end = occasionally guilty but eventually good. One important part of a break-up is how you do it. Again, for those with no experience: face-to-face = “the best”, via some form technology = the worst.
But I wanted to discover the nuances of this scale and find out if there were any worse ways to dump someone than what is generally agreed to be the worst – over a text message. So I had a walk around and asked some people a question: What’s the worst way you’ve ever dumped someone?

Iain, 26: I don’t think I’ve ever done anything too horrible. I’ve always done it face-to-face. You’ve got to be a man about these things.
That’s noble. What about the other way round? Have you ever been dumped badly?
Yeah, actually. I had a garden hose sprayed at me because she was watering the plants at the time. That’s how she dumped me.
Would you ever consider being as harsh?
Nah, definitely not. Better to leave things where they are. Shit’s already pretty bad if you’re breaking up.
Spot on, mate.
Epharoe, 22: Via the internet, probably. I haven’t really been that nasty to people, I’m afraid.
Have you ever been dumped badly?
Yes – that was done online after we’d been going out for a month, and they were just quite rude about it and I was feeling pretty vulnerable about it and they just told me to get on with it. Then they never spoke to me again. That was pretty bad, yeah.
:(
Kassandra, 23: Well, I was talking to my friend about how much I hated this guy I was dating and I accidentally pocket-dialled him, so he just heard me talking about, like, how much I hated him. I don’t know if that counts.
That definitely counts. Have you ever been dumped as badly?
I don’t think I’ve ever been dumped.
Lucky you. Do you think it’s better to act honourably about it or be harsh?
What I usually do is annoy them until they dump me, because I feel really bad.
Why’s that?
It’s only if the guy is, like, really disgusting, and then I don’t give a shit. If I feel sorry for him, I just think that I’m gonna be a bitch until he dumps me. I don’t know. I’m a really hard chick to handle.
Yep.
James, 26: I guess just, like, stringing them along for a bit and telling them I’m not really interested.
Cold. What’s the worst way you’ve ever been dumped?
I’m probably not the best person to ask these questions – I don’t think I’ve ever been in a serious relationship.
Really? Why?
Well, I’m the youngest of six kids, so I’ve seen a lot of things. Also, I guess I’m just too selfish.
Fair enough.
Camille, 19: Through MSN, I think it was. I just said I didn’t want to be with them any more.
Blunt. What about being dumped?
Well, once, we’d planned how we’d dump each other by telling, like, a joke. So when one of us told the joke, then we’d know it was over. He used that on me and so I was, like, a bit shocked, but that was also a bit fun.
Okay. Have you ever been affected by a break-up to the point where it’s changed your view on relationships?
God yeah. Every break-up changes the next relationship, right?
Right on, sister.
