If you live in New York, you may have noticed we’ve been running a little screening series for the past few months with our friends over at Nitehawk Cinema. It’s called Music Driven, and it’s continuing this weekend with a screening of This Is England. The movie is about the anti-racist skinhead punk scene that developed in England back in the 80s—before it was coopted by assholes and turned into a recruitment ground for white nationalist storm troopers. All of this is documented in Gavin Watson’s photo book he put together for VICE, Skins and Punks. You can buy that right here, by the way.
This Is Englandwas directed by Shane Meadows, who was well aware of Watson’s work, and worked it into the production. Watching a bunch of anti-racist skinheads bop around industrial streets to the tune of classic reggae is our version of heaven, so we decided to screen the film.

The movie is playing at Nitehawk on Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15. Both screenings are at noon, and both will feature Q&As with Rob “Bucket” Hingley, the former owner of Moon Ska Records and the frontman of longtime ska band the Toasters. You can buy tickets right here, but if you don’t feel like spending money, that’s OK. We’re giving away two pairs, and you can win them by clicking telling us you want them. (Just do us a favor and tell us which day you’d like to attend.) Both screenings are at noon, but you can always get there early and have brunch.
