Pomplamoose is the happy-go-lucky music duo of Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn who got YouTube famous with looped covers of “Single Ladies” and “My Favorite Things.” Now, they’re making DIY projection-mapped music videos in what looks like their basement. With foam-block sets, a makeshift greenscreen, and a leaf blower as a wind machine, the San Francisco couple filmed the final cut of their latest, “Like a Million,” in one take.
It’s far from flawless—we see Nataly’s hands switching sets and can tell that the surfaces aren’t smooth—but that’s part of the charm. We know what it looks like when a team has the support of industrial robots and highly-trained technologists (shout out to the ever-mind-blowing “Box” by Bot & Dolly), but Pomplamoose shows what’s possible with a projector and some creativity.
