After penning the cult classic Kids and turning James Franco into a deranged drug dealer with Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine is slated to take a lighter turn with his next film called The Beach Bum, a comedy starring Matthew McConaughey.
Though details on the film are scant, we know McConaughey will play a guy named Moondog who is “a rebellious and lovable rogue who lives life large,” according to a press release. The role seems right up the Oscar-winning actor’s alley because he’s essentially played rebellious and lovable rogues in Dazed and Confused, Mud, Magic Mike, True Detective… you get the point. He’s good at that shit.

The comedy following Moondog’s “hilarious misadventures”—which ostensibly unfold on or near a beach—is set to enter production this fall and hit theaters in 2018. Korine will direct, with John Lesher, Steve Golin, and Charles-Marie Anthonioz producing, among others. Lesher produced the Oscar-winning Birdman, Golin produced The Revenant and Spotlight, and Anthonioz helped Korine bring Spring Breakers to the screen. NEON and VICE bought the rights to The Beach Bum at Cannes this week.
“In The Beach Bum, Harmony has crafted the perfect movie for our dark and serious time,” Lesher said in a statement, “a refreshingly original, irreverent, and hilarious stoner comedy that only he could create.”
