Ghent-via-NYC producer Andy Butler yesterday released an insistent new solo track on Rotterdam imprint Electronic Emergencies’ compilation The Closet Tapes, making a rare departure from his Hercules & Love Affair project as a recording artist. Featuring a straightforward arrangement of robotic synths, calming whispered vocals, and crisply thwacking percussion, “Vlaamsekat!” is an experiment in unmediated kinetic energy.
The artist summed up the track’s spirit for THUMP over email. “It kind of sounds like a monkey discovered a drum machine and heard new beat or techno earlier in the day, and decided to make a song,” he said. “Kind of like what actually happened.”
