Sleeve Notes: HNNY

Gilmore Girls!

Sleeve Notes is a series where we pick an artist and get them to make a themed mix. This week: Stockholm’s yummiest producer HNNY bringing you his own soundtrack to Gilmore Girls (yes the TV-show).

NOISEY: Yo HNNY what's up?
HNNY: I’m taking it quite easy. I’m on a break from playing and been concentrating on making more music instead. That was kind of the problem when travelling around DJing every weekend; it was hard to find time to produce, you know. Yeah, you cancelled your Australia tour, right?
Exactly, and my upcoming US tour and plenty of gigs in Europe as well. Come to think about it, I've cancelled shitloads of gigs! Some dates weren't not announced yet and where kind of far into the future, but I felt like I really needed a pause. I’ve literally been playing every week for the last two years. Many of the people I meet when out playing are DJs, first and foremost, while I see myself as a producer. When being a DJ I guess the goal is to be out traveling all the time doing gigs, but it’s not like that for me. Of course it’s fun to DJ, but now I want to focus on making music. When hearing about the theme of your mixtape something struck me, you’re known for playing a lot of shows and making a lot of music, how do you find time to watch Gilmore Girls? It’s been on for seven seasons.
Haha. I always have a show I’m watching. On the wall of my studio it says ”TAKE A BREAK”, which is a good motto. It’s easy for me to accidentally work on a track forever. That's why it’s important for me to take a break and to get distanced from the track, which can be a good thing. And when taking this infamous break I often watch a TV show, and lately it’s been Gilmore Girls. Why has Gilmore Girls been your go-to show lately?
Well, I watched it when it was on TV, and I haven’t seen it since. Gilmore Girls was one those shows I really liked when I was younger. With time passing I’ve forgotten certain things and it felt right to watch it again. Which character can you relate to the most?
Lorelai. She’s the main character and she’s all about her own style. Her life is generally messy and it’s the same for me.

Annons

Since this mixtape is your own Gilmore Girls soundtrack what do you think makes a good soundtrack?
I guess it’s supposed to heighten the emotions of what you’re watching, and it’s nice if it’s somewhat unexpected – but still fits. You know when you see a film and a song comes on that you really wouldn’t expect but it fits so good? Like that. Most soundtracks are very expected, which is fine, but it doesn’t make you think about the music. For example, I like when they throw in modern music in films set in older times. That’s getting more and more common. Like the songs for The Great Gatsby, with Jay Z and Lana Del Rey etcetera.
Yeah, and my mixtape is the other way around. Most often in the show they used new music, I mean, music from that time. The thought behind my mixtape was to create the soundtrack I wanted to hear, so I used older songs that worked thematically. Would you like to score a film?
Yes. I’ve done that a little bit, and some for the theatre, but it’s a while ago now. When creating a track for my own it’s always a blank page from the beginning and it’s about inventing something from thin air, you know. It’s a whole different thing working on something for a film or a play, which is super fun, because you get pointers from people you work with on the projects, how they want it to sound like etcetera, and that’s nice. Would it be wise to make a score since you always put so much time into your projects? Unlike Hans Zimmer, for example.
I think Hans Zimmer puts a lot of time into his projects as well. By the way, I saw this amazing behind the scenes clip when Hans Zimmer is making the score for The Dark Knight. It’s so cool. It’s as if these composers have this whole other mindset where they can convert feelings into notes. But I know what you mean, I get that feeling when watching Swedish films, they often don’t put any effort into the score. It’s very trendy at the moment to use electronic artists as composers for scores, so maybe the time is right?
Perhaps it is! So what’s next?
Our next release coming out on Yummy Records in February stars David Günther and Shakarchi & Stranéus. Also in February my EP Carefree is released on the label Pets, operated by the band Catz ’N Dogz. After that a 12” is released on Let’s Play House with the tracks ”Solsidan” and ”Alby”. In May I’m releasing my full-length called Sunday. That’s about it. Sounds like you have your hands full with new stuff.
Yes, sir!
